Health

Grammitra is dedicated to improving the quality of life for citizens across India by enhancing access to safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, and public health. In the absence of such facilities, women and children are disproportionately affected, impacting health and nutrition indicators. Sustainable improvement in service delivery, supported by government and donor investments, requires active community participation and local institutional ownership. Key intervention areas include capacity building for local institutions and the establishment of participatory planning, monitoring, and implementation systems.

EDUCATION

Since 2011 Gram Mitra with the support of CRY has been working on improving the quality of education and creating awareness on the right to education in 16 villages of Kartala block of Korba District. The overall situation of education among children in the 16 villages in Kartala block is characterized by low levels of enrolment and retention of tribal children in school especially Pahadi Korva and Birhor tribals, owing to poor infrastructure, lack of quality teaching and learning, irregularity of teachers and lack of subject wise teachers, gap between vernacular language and teaching in official language, inactive and defunct School Monitoring Communities (SMCs) that are not functioning as prescribed in the RTE Act-2009. There also a lack of monitoring of the day to day functioning of schools, unavailability of schools and lack of proper infrastructure. The distance of schools and poor transport facilities Mean that children are forced to drop out of school, especially due to child labour .

Participatory Local Governance

Grammitra is committed to strengthening local governance institutions by empowering Village Panchayats (elected representatives and functionaries) to fulfill their roles in economic development and social justice. The devolution of functions to local governance encompasses basic services such as drinking water, sanitation, and public health; environmental and livelihood promotion functions like sustainable agriculture, watershed management, and environmental conservation; and ensuring citizens’ rights and entitlements provided by the State, such as pensions, scholarships, and social protection measures. Grammitra provides support to local governance institutions at various tiers—village, block, and district. Vibrant and effective Gram Sabhas (village councils) are achievable through the strengthening of capacities among youth groups, women’s self-help groups, and other forms of Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
